Physician From Gibsonia Receives National Award for Exceptional Teaching Skills

The Arthroscopy Association of North America recently honored Dr. S. Joshua Szabo of Tri Rivers Surgical Associates for his teaching skills.

The Gibsonia / Richland Township resident received the Stephen J. Snyder Excellence in Teaching Award at AANA's recent annual convention in Orlando, FL.

“AANA is pleased to present Dr. Szabo with this distinguished award, honoring him for his outstanding lectures at AANA,” said Ed Goss, AANA executive director.

“Dr. Szabo’s work helps to foster the development and dissemination of knowledge of arthroscopic surgery and to improve the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculo-skeletal system.”

AANA President Richard L. Angelo, M.D., presented the award; it is given annually to one physician, based on his or her teaching evaluations. 

Szabo has lectured across the country about arthroscopic shoulder surgery, knee ligament reconstruction techniques and other orthopedic topics.

In February, Szabo taught an AANA course on arthroscopic skills for residents with nationally recognized Paul D. Fadale, M.D.; Vipool K. Goradia, M.D.; and Daniel Zelanzny, M.D.  

The primary purpose of the course is for students to understand how to successfully perform arthroscopic procedures of the knee and shoulder, and knot tying, according to Szabo.

Since 2004, Szabo has been an AANA member and volunteers as a lab instructor at AANA’s surgical skills courses. This is the second time the AANA has honored him. In 2010, he was a finalist for the Stephen J. Snyder Award.

He completed his medical degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and his orthopedic training at Drexel University’s College of Medicine.

Szabo performed a sports medicine fellowship at the Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Jackson, MS.

He has written numerous articles about orthopedic surgery techniques and performed several clinical studies.

Szabo also serves as team physician for the U.S. Ski Team and Snowboard Association and several area high schools.

Tri Rivers Surgical Associates is a multispecialty physician practice serving communities north of Pittsburgh. The group specializes in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, primary care sports medicine and rheumatology.
