PITTSBURGH, PA — Allegheny General Hospital's emergency department will be renovated and expanded in a $43 million upgrade, the Allegheny Health Network announced Tuesday. The multi-phased, 36,000-square-foot project is slated for completion by the end of 2027.
Hospital officials contend the new state-of-the-art emergency department will better enable the medical center to better service the more than 40,000 people annually who are treated there.
"At AGH, we are committed to providing exceptional care and services for every emergency health need, and this new facility will greatly expand our capacity to do so,” AGH president Dr. Imran Qadeer said in a statement. “It will be a facility at better accommodates the growing demand for emergency services and empowers one of the best emergency medicine teams in the country to excel in meeting that demand.”

The new emergency department will have 57 treatment rooms and 48 patient beds, designed with open sight lines to maximize care efficiency and patient safety. Utilizing ambient glass enclosures, each room will foster a transparent environment, improving visibility and navigation for both staff and patients.
The project will occur in five stages to minimize disruption to patient care. The first phase, expected to be completed this fall, will include a new waiting area, triage and care initiation rooms, and a space for patients awaiting test results.

The first phase also will include a relocated entrance to the department, which will be positioned for greater visibility and near a new, centralized security station. A larger X-ray room will be built adjacent to existing CT rooms.
The second phase involves relocating and expanding the department's trauma and resuscitation rooms.
Additional phases will include adding secure treatment rooms to support patients with behavioral health needs, as well as a dedicated corridor with direct elevator access to the trauma intensive care unit, operating rooms and radiology suite for streamlined patient transport to and from the emergency department.
Additionally, a new lounge and dedicated respite room will provide clinicians and staff with a space to rest.
