PITTSBURGH, PA — Amid several coaching changes announced Friday, the Pirates said they are bringing back former manager Gene Lamont to the organization.

Gene Lamont, 78, who managed the team from 1997-2000, will serve as a special advisor and coach for Don Kelly, the Pirates' new manager. Kelly was named manager last week after Derek Shelton was fired.

This will be Lamont's third stint with the organization. He was a coach from 1986-91 under former manager Jim Leyland and was a coach again in 1996. He also served as a coach for the Detroit Tigers under Leyland from 2006-2013 and Brad Ausmus from 2014-17.

The Pirates also added Chris Truby, their manager at AAA affiliate Indianapolis, to the major league staff as a coach. Turby, who will work with Pittsburgh’s infielders, played four seasons MBL with Houston (2000-01), Montreal (2002), Detroit (2002) and Tampa Bay (2003).

The Pirates also announced that third-base coach Mike Rabelo will expand his role on the bench for Kelly, having increased responsibilities in game planning and in-game strategy.
