PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, PA — A local man who had been charged with raping a young girl more than 100 times over the course of a six-year period in the late 1990s and early 2000s has received a prison sentence for his crimes.

Daniel Barnett, 39, of Plymouth Township, this month was sentenced to 5 to 10 years in state prison after pleading guilty to numerous felony counts of child rape, according to court records.

Prosecutors charged Barnett in April after investigators said the now-29-year-old victim came forward to say that she had been repeatedly raped between the time she was 5 years old until she was 9 or 10 while the child was in Barnett's relative's home in Plymouth Township and also when the two were in the victim's Whitemarsh Township home, Patch previously reported.

"This defendant was repeatedly sexually assaulting a very young girl for years," Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said in a prior statement.

While prosecutors explained how Barnett and the victim knew each other, Patch has chosen to not divulge the nature of the relationship between the victim and Barnett in order to protect the woman's identity.

Prosecutors previously stated that the sexual abuse began with Barnett touching the victim's private parts over her clothing and eventually progressed to Barnett raping the girl and sexually assaulting her in other ways.

Court records in the case show that Barnett was originally charged with a total of 62 felonies and a whole host of misdemeanors in connection with the case.

The criminal docket sheet shows that Barnett pleaded guilty on Nov. 9 to 10 separate child rape felony charges; numerous other charges were dismissed in exchange for the admission.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas P. Rogers handed down sentencing after the guilty plea.

Rogers also ordered Barnett to comply with Megan's Law sex offender registration requirements, have no contact with the victim, undergo a psychosexual evaluation and comply with recommendations, and undergo a sexually violent predator assessment.

Rogers ordered that confinement be concurrent for the separate felony counts meaning Barnett got an aggregate sentence of 5 to 10 years behind bars.

Barnett was about 14 years old when the sexual assaults began and about 20 years old when the activity ceased.
