WHITEMARSH, PA — A section of a major thoroughfare in this eastern Montgomery County community will be shut down for a month's time while utility crews perform upgrades in the area.

Whitemarsh Township officials warned area residents and commuters that a portion of Butler Pike would be closed for 30 days starting Monday while PECO works to install a new natural gas main to service the local community.

In a letter to residents made available by the township, PECO officials said that work to install the new natural gas main would require a 24-hour roadway closure between 5160 and 5168 Butler Pike, and that detours for drivers coming through the region would be clearly marked.

"During this work, we will work closely with local officials to minimize the impact on traffic and pedestrians whenever possible," PECO stated in the letter. "Access for services such as trash removal and emergency vehicles will be maintained during construction."

PECO said that any areas impacted by the work on private property or local streets would be repaired and restored to their original condition, and that repaving work would take place upon the completion of the gas main installation.

Residents and business owners who live and work south of 5160 Butler Pike are being asked to access and exit their residences via Campus Drive or straight out to Butler Pike, while those living or working north of 5168 Butler Pike are being told to enter and exit their properties via Stenton Avenue or Township Line Road.

All motorists are being asked to drive at reduced speed through the work zone and use extreme caution due to the presence of construction workers and pedestrians in the area.

The work will be performed by PECO contractor Utility Line Services.
