Crumble Versus Cut

"Actually, the Pottstown area is one of the drier areas in the state." - Tom Kines, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.com

If you don’t like to mow your grass, July has been your kind of month, said Tom Kines on Thursday.

Kines, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.com, said Pottstown received roughly an inch of rain in the last month.

“That’s way below normal,” he said, adding that the area typically gets 4.25 inches of rain in July.

That's significant.

“Actually, the Pottstown area is one of the drier areas in the state,” Kines said. “The Pottstown area has been missed by a lot of thunderstorms.”

Kines said a few showers or a thunderstorm could head toward Pottstown in the next day or so, but the area probably won't receive much water.

“In general, it’s looking like the weekend will be dry,” he said.

If there’s no significant rain in the next two weeks, Pottstown might need to employ some water restrictions, he said, adding the lack of water causes the climate to be hotter.

“If you have dry ground, that actually allows the temperature to rise higher than it normally would,” he said. Dry conditions can add two to four degrees to the temperature.

“We don’t need a heavy thunderstorm right now,” Kines said. “What we need is a gentle rain.”

And that doesn’t look promising.

“I don’t think there’s any significant rain coming anytime soon,” he said.
