Shorty’s Sunflower Café Helps Meals On Wheels

The restaurant is hosting its annual fundraiser for Meals on Wheels through June 30.

, 1494 North Charlotte Street, this week will conclude its annual fundraiser for the Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program, which delivers balanced meals to the elderly at their homes.

In conjunction with the fundraiser, Shorty’s sells raffle tickets for prizes that include gift baskets, artwork and gift certificates to local businesses.

The café also sells advertising space on T-shirts their staff wears during the fundraiser.

Karen E. Konnick, director of marketing and communications for Family Services, said Shorty’s -- owned by Liz Bieber and her husband George -- has been holding fundraisers for Meals on Wheels for nearly 10 years.  

"In that time, they have raised more than $64,000," Konnick said via email. "These funds support Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program, which has been serving meals to homebound elderly and disabled individuals in Pottstown for 40 years."

Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program provides two meals, a hot lunch and a cold supper to refrigerate, to an average of 160 homebound elderly and disabled individuals in Pottstown, Royersford and the Lower Perkiomen Valley, Konnick said.

"Community volunteers personally deliver over 81,000 meals a year, bringing nourishment, friendship and a kind word to those most in need," she said.
