To Honor Jake

While Rebecca Moletzsky and her family continue to mourn the loss of her brother, they move forward and find comfort in honoring his mission to help others. 

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Jason S. “Jake” Moletzsky was flying with the Air Station Sacramento rescue team looking for a lost boater off the coast of California when their C130 collided with a U.S. Marine Cobra helicopter that had been on a training flight in the area.

Jake Moletzsky, six of his crew mates and two Marines died in the October 29, 2009 crash.

The pain is still raw, but the family turns to Jake Moletzsky’s compassion and follows his example to make life better for other people.

Rebecca Moletzsky, an officer with the Pottstown Police Department, organized a basketball tournament that will be played June 25 to honor her brother.

The event, which begins at 8 a.m. at Pottstown High School, will raise money for a fund in her brother’s name that gives scholarships to military-bound graduates of Norristown High School -- the Moletzsky siblings’ alma mater.

It will also collect funds for the Pottstown Police Officer's Association, which gives scholarships to Pottstown High School graduates, and the Pottstown Policemen’s Ball for Montgomery County Law Enforcement Officials.

“We’re still working through the whole grieving process,” Rebecca Moletzsky said and added that she’s grateful to her brother’s friends and family who will come from across the country for the memorial basketball game and fundraiser. “We’re basically trying to keep it for what my brother loved.”

In addition to serving his country, Jake Moletzsky enjoyed snowboarding, fishing and ice hockey, Rebecca Moletzsky said. She hopes to grow his memorial fund to sponsor a program that would incorporate those sports to help needy children, she said. 

Rebecca Moletzsky said she hopes events such as the basketball tournament will remind folks of her brother’s dedication to help other people.

“He was genuinely a good, happy person,” she said. “He died doing what he loved.”
