Frederick Living Celebrates 125 Years of Service
Established by Reverend N.B. Grubb as the Mennonite Home for the Aged, Frederick Living first opened its doors to residents on September 1, 1896. As the home grew and flourished, a personal care wing was added in 1957 and a skilled nursing center was built and dedicated in 1971. The organization incorporated in 1973 and obtained its IRS 501c3 designation in 1976.
In the late 1970’s and 1980’s a group of residential cottages were built and occupied. The organization was renamed Frederick Mennonite Community in 1988. In 1993, a major expansion took place to add sixty-three independent living apartments and a community center. It featured a library, larger kitchen, dining rooms, a wellness suite and gift shop. Personal care areas were renovated and expanded from 2001 to 2010, adding a new 24-room memory support area for residents with dementia. In 2005, ten residential living “villas” were constructed.
With a focus on “wellness,” a campus fitness center was opened in 2006 and the community tag line became “Live well with us.” The name “Frederick Living” was adopted in 2011 to highlight the community’s broad welcome to all. In 2015, three new dining venues began to offer a variety of healthy menu options. Fifty-five cottage homes, called The Meadows, built in a “pocket neighborhood design,” were completed and occupied in 2019.
Rooted in the Mennonite heritage, Frederick Living has been driven by the values of respect, integrity, compassion and excellence throughout its history.
