Delco Literacy Council Calls For Volunteers

Volunteers for literacy in Delaware County can attend training in January but should sign up now, says Literacy Council.

RADNOR TOWNSHIP, PA — The Delaware County Literacy Council put out a call for volunteers, asking for help in programs that improve basic literary skills.

Delco's literacy council challenged residents to "resolve to change a life" in 2021, asking people to volunteer as literacy tutors in either Adult Basic Education (ABE) or English as a Second Language (ESL). Volunteers work one-on-one with adult students to help them improve their basic skills.

"Kick off 2021 with an uplifting and meaningful resolution: volunteer your time, knowledge, and energy to help an adult improve his or her basic skills," the literacy council said.

The Delaware County Literacy Council helps adults develop reading, writing, math, and English language skills so that these adults can thrive in the workplace and community. Volunteering as a literacy tutor not only results in gratifying personal rewards, but it also helps strengthen the entire community, the council said.

The Delaware County Literacy Council said this year it will offer training for new volunteers in a virtual format, because of COVID-19. Training and tutoring materials are provided.

Volunteer tutors are currently meeting their adult students via online platforms. In-person tutoring, when deemed safe, takes place in a public setting, such as a public library.

"If you have patience, compassion for others, and a lifelong love of learning, consider sharing your talents by becoming a volunteer tutor in the coming year," the literacy council said.
