Philly Man Told Police Gun Fired By Accident In Radnor Park: Police

A 9mm bullet casing was found in Fenimore Park that matched the suspect's weapon, police said.

RADNOR, PA —A 21-year-old Philadelphia man told police he accidentally dropped his loaded 9mm handgun on a rock and it discharged at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Fenimore Woods Park in the Wayne section of the township, according to a criminal complaint available Thursday.

Samir Muckelroy-Smith is free on $2,000 bail awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.

  • Muckelroy-Smith told police he dropped his fiance off at Eastern University for classes at 8:20 a.m. and then drove to a parking lot in the 100 block of King of Prussia Road, and was watching movies in his car while waiting for her.
  • The suspect said he was sitting in his vehicle for over an hour and decided to take a walk.
  • Muckelroy-Smith said he got his gun out, loaded it and started walking to the park.
  • The suspect said he went to take out his cellphone and the gun fell out of his pocket, hitting a rock and discharging. He said he picked up the gun and walked back to the car.
  • A witness said he heard a gunshot and saw a man with a gun in his hand enter a parked car.
  • Police said they found a shell casing in the park that was fired from the suspect’s gun.
  • Police then located a vehicle and occupant that matched the description provided by the witnesses in the 100 block of King of Prussia Road during a traffic stop.
  • Muckelroy-Smith was taken into custody.
