Radnor Manager Wants Red Light Cameras, Radar Guns

Bob Zienkowski says red light and stop sign running are rampant in Radnor.

On Monday, we wrote that some business owners in downtown Wayne say that Radnor Township's ticketing of cars parked at meters is too "aggressive."

While being interviewed for that article, Radnor Police Superintendent William Colarulo and Radnor Manager Bob Zienkowski told Radnor Patch that there are two law violations that the township will be aggressively enforcing—red light and stop sign running.

"We're trying to step up red light and stop sign enforcement," Colarulo said, adding that there will be a boost when the department's newly hired officers are on the street.

The summer makes it an even more important time to address these dangerous violations, Zienkowski said, with adults and children out walking and riding bikes.

"When it's yellow, I'm slowing down, and they're speeding up," he said of some drivers. Zienkowski said he has seen so many people run red lights and roll past stop signs that he requested the enforcement focus.

Colarulo said he, like many other police departments in the state, wants the use of radar guns, which would make catching speeders easier for the police. Currently, only State Police are allowed to use radar guns.

Also, Zienkowski said he supports the expansion of a bill that would allow red light cameras in places like Radnor. The cameras, which take pictures of cars running red lights and automatically mails them fines, are currently only allowed in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, he said.
