Radnor Police And Firefighters Are Out For Blood

Police and firefighters are competing to recruit blood donors in the American Red Cross Battle of Badges drive.

RADNOR, PA —Radnor Township police officers are competing with the township firefighters Thursday to see who can recruit the most blood donors in the American Red Cross “Battle of the Badges” blood drive.

The fire company won the drive the past two years, and this year the police department is out for blood this year.

The drive is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m at the Radnor Township Activity Center, 125 S. Wayne Ave.

“The ‘Battle of the Badge’ blood drive is an opportunity for our first responders to give back to the community they serve every day and an opportunity for the public to give back as well,” Radnor Township Superintendent of Police Christopher B. Flanagan said.

Radnor Fire Chief Joseph Maguire said: “Regardless of who brings in the most donors, everybody wins.”

When donors arrive at the blood drive, they will have the opportunity to cast a vote for Radnor Township Police or Radnor Fire Company.

The winning agency gets bragging rights and a plaque, but the real winners are the patients and their families who benefit from the lifesaving blood that is collected.

Blood Shortage and Immediate Need

This year’s Radnor Township Battle of the Badges is more important than ever as a shortage in blood donations last month could stress the blood supply, according to the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross collected over 26,000 fewer blood donations than needed in May to meet the needs of patients.

There is an immediate need in the Philadelphia region for type B-negative blood.

Only 2 percent of the population has B-negative blood and can help meet this special need.
