Transformer Explosion Blows Out Storefront Window on Wayne Avenue

Several businesses in the Wayne section of Radnor remained without power following Monday's fire.

An underground transformer explosion blew out the storefront windows of the Suburban Building on North Wayne Avenue, according to a statement from Radnor Township Manager Robert Zienkowski to the Wayne Business Association.

According to Main Line Media News, 14 surrounding businesses lost power after the explosion that occurred at approximately 8 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival to the scene at 100 North Wayne Avenue, responders cut power to 80 more businesses to safely investigate the explosion. PECO expects to have power restored to all customers by Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

The explosion occurred between the Great American Pub and Suburban Building, with the Surburban Building losing its front window and additional damage to the restaurant, as well as water damage from sprinklers.

Radnor Police evacuated North Wayne Avenue from Lancaster Avenue to Station/West avenues during the response. With intersection signals along North Wayne malfunctioning, police had the block locked down and controlled access to the site .

Somewhere after 2 a.m., power was restored to the signal at Lancaster and North Wayne, police say, with the rest of the signals restored later. North Wayne Avenue is open to traffic as PECO working on the blown transformer.

Radnor Township School District has been notified and are working together with the police at North Wayne Avenue and Station Road to cross children and pedestrians.
