5 Shot, 1 Killed Leaving Suburban Philadelphia Football Scrimmage

Nicolas Elizalde, 14, of Havertown, was killed when dozens of shots were fired on boys leaving a scrimmage in Roxborough.

ROXBOROUGH, PHILADELPHIA — The 14-year-old boy killed in a hail of gunfire Tuesday in Roxborough has been identified as a Havertown resident.

Fox 29 and Action News report the boy has been identified as Nicolas Elizalde. He was a student at Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences, which is about a mile and a half from Roxborough High School, where the shooting occurred.

According to police, the shooting happened at about 4:30 p.m. on the 4700 block of Pechin Street.

The gunmen were waiting on the block in a light colored, possibly green Ford Explorer, for about six minutes for the victims to come by.

Police said other groups of boys walked by the gunmen's vehicle before they opened fire on their victims.

At least 64 shell casings were found at the scene.

Five boys were shot. Four of the victims, including Elizalde, were taken to a hospital and another suffered a graze wound.

According to Fox 29, a 17-year-old was shot in the arm and leg, and a 14-year-old, identified by Action News as Alex Torres, and a 15-year-old were both shot in the leg. The three are reportedly in stable condition.

Police said the 17-year-old victim may have been the target of the shooting, as one of the shooter chased him while shooting at him.

The teen was struck and fell to the ground, and the gunman stood over him, firing more rounds.

Police said the only reason he stopped shooting was he either ran out of ammunition or the gun jammed.

Four of the five victims are football players at Roxborough High School, police said.

The investigation is in its early stages, and police said it's unclear what could have led to the shooting.
