McCandless Police Hire Officer Involved in Jordan Miles Case, Post-Gazette Reports

An attorney for Officer Richard Ewing said the move was based on "a lifestyle decision".

McCandless Police Department has hired an officer who was involved in the controversial Jordan Miles case in Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

An attorney for Officer Richard Ewing told the Post-Gazette that the move was based on "a lifestyle decision" and was not related to the Miles case. Attorney Robert Leight represented Ewing when Miles sued the officer in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh.

Ewing was one of three Pittsburgh police officers implicated in the 2010 beating of Miles, then a student at Pittsburgh CAPA High School.

After days of deliberation, a federal court jury found that Officers Ewing, Michael Saldutte and David Sisak did not maliciously prosecute Miles, according to the Post-Gazette.

The jury could not agree on whether the officers falsely arrested and abused Miles, the Post-Gazette reported.

Miles was 18 when he claimed the three stopped him at night on Tioga Street in the city's Homewood neighborhood as he walked from his mother's house to his grandmother's house, according to the Post-Gazette.

Without identifying themselves, they beat and arrested him, Miles said. The officers countered that they believed he had a weapon and resisted arrest.

Miles has asked for a new trial, which is scheduled to begin in January, Leight said.
