How & When to Recycle Leaves in Springfield

Curbside leaf collection begins soon in Springfield.

Fall's coming hard, so how do you get rid of those leaves? Starting in late October, Springfield Township begins its leaf collection efforts.

According to the township's website, bagged leaf pick-up starts Nov. 5 and runs through Dec. 3. Springfield staggers collection by districts throughout the municipality.

Each week, sanitation workers will sweep specific areas on designated trash days. The total list is attached to the article. It begins Oct. 29 with the 5th Ward, 2nd Precinct; 6th Ward, 1st Precinct; 2nd Ward, 2nd Precinct; and 1st Ward, 2nd Precinct.

Every ward will be hit at least once through the fall. The Springfield Board of Commissioners explained earlier this month what happens if more collection is needed.

"After that (time period), the township will go through the town and pick up areas after the leaf collection has occurred that need it," Commissioner Vice President Lee Janiczek (3rd Ward) said.

Annually, Springfield Township rotates the collection order, so every section of the town varies its leaf collection schedule over a period of several years.

"No one will really be short changed in the long run," Janiczek said.

Additionally, no leaf collection—or any sanitation pickup—will occur Nov. 12—due to Veterans' Day.
