Excessive Heat Warning In Effect For Much Of Philadelphia Area

With maximum heat index values expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees, and maximum temperatures in the 90s today, officials are warning that the heat and humidity will become a danger if proper precautions are not taken.

The National Weather Service recommends taking extra precautions if working or spending time outside. If possible, reschedule strenuous activities for early morning or late evening. Wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.

If working outside, it is recommended that one schedule frequent rest breaks in a shaded or air conditioned environment. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool location.

Officials suggest drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air conditioned room – or otherwise out of the sun – and checking on elderly relatives and neighbors.

In addition, children and pets should never be left unattended in a parked vehicle. The interior of a vehicle can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Make sure pets at home have adequate water and shelter from the sun.

Here’s the forecast for the rest of the week, including a chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight and Tuesday:

Today: Isolated thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Tuesday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 8pm and midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 65. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 84.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 63.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 83.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 65.
