Former Senator Specter Signs Books in Devon

A small handful of fans turn out for event.

Visiting the Friday Night, former Senator Arlen Specter signed books and blasted partisan politics that he says have changed the tone of debate and the country since he took office in 1980.

About ten people, including at least three store employees and one reporter, listened as Specter made brief remarks before signing copies of his book.  Specter also signed copies of his book Never Give In about battling cancer while serving in the U.S. Senate.

In his new book, Life Among the Cannibals: A Policital Career, A Tea Party Uprising, and the End of Governing as We Know It Specter blasts a lack of civility in politics in Washington. Commenting on the Supreme Court's pending ruling on healthcare Friday night, Specter took a political shot at Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who could cast a critical swing vote on the constitutionality of what has become known as Obamacare.

"Kennedy likes the concept of the 'Kennedy Court' and he may have an eye on history." Specter told Patch, "and he (may) think he could burnish his reputation." The current Supreme Court will historically be known as 'The Roberts Court' after Chief Justice John Roberts.

After signing books for those in line and another stack of books provided by the store, Specter asked a Barnes & Noble staffer if the signed books he was leaving at the store counted toward sales numbers. They do, he was told. Specter says he is not concerned about the royalties, but that he really wants people to read the book. Specter tells Patch he wants the public to vote in every election and how important it is to understand that every vote counts.
