CHESTER COUNTY, PA — Severe storms Sunday dumped more rain on Chester County in one day than in a typical summer month, according to Tom Kines, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, State College.

Kines said that three to six inches of rain fell on Chester County from late morning Sunday to late afternoon.

“It was very tropical yesterday,” Kines said. “It was unusual. But the good news is that it will be dry for the next few days, and the air quality will be better.”

The temperature was at 73 degrees Monday morning, with the air quality rated “good.” Tomorrow the air quality is expected to be "moderate."

In June, the air quality in Chester County was unhealthy due to the smoke from wildfires in eastern Canada.

"No significant damage"

According to Patty Mains, public information officer for Chester County, there was no significant damage reported from the heavy rainfall over the weekend.

In addition to widespread rain and thunderstorms, during the day on Saturday and Sunday, Chester County also had flash flooding in these areas:

  • Saturday: secondary roads in West Whiteland, Berwyn and Paoli
  • Sunday: Downingtown, West Whiteland, and Honey Brook.

On both days, emergency crews responded to stuck vehicles and wires and trees down.
Once the storms passed, drainage systems throughout the county were able to catch up and remove the water. Municipal road crews were able to clear downed trees effectively.
