Summer School: For the Health of It!

Summer school's not just for catching up, there are still some classes available to help kids get ahead.

School's out for summer, but summer school's just getting started at Conestoga High School.  About 450 students are enrolled for the summer program that is run by the Chester County Intermediate Unit. While there are students attending from districts all over Chester County for remedial or make up work, many are taking classes to get a jump on the 2011-2012 school year.

CCIU's Sumer School Supervisor Lee Temperton says classes started Monday at Conestoga. The run from 8a.m. until noon (plus homework). Students come from school districts  all over Chester County to attend.

Temperton says many students sign up to take summer classes to get a jump on S.A.T preparation, advanced math classes or to make room in their schedules for elective classes during the school year.

Even though classes have already started, there are still some courses available. There is still space available in Algebra and Geometry classes which start in mid-July. Those classes condense a full academic year into 60 hours of class time spread over three weeks. Temperton says students who want to take advanced math classes in 11th and 12th grade often sign up to get 10th grade geometry completed over the summer.

Some students also like to take state-required Health I and Health II classes over the summer. Health I is a two week summer class. Health II runs for one week in the summer.  Temperton explains that students often take health class over the summer to make room for elective courses that are only offered during the regular school year.
