Commissioners Approve Traffic Signal Video Technology

New video technology will help cut down wait times at intersections.

Upper Dublin Township Commissioners approved a bid contract to install traffic signal improvements at five intersections throughout the township.

Township Manager, Paul Leonard, described the technology as installing “smart” traffic signals. New video technology installed into the traffic signals will learn the traffic

patterns at its intersection and adjusts itself appropriately.

Leonard said with the new technology installed, there could be up to a 60 percent drop in wait times at traffic signals.

He added, that when the technology breaks on the traffic signals, they will default to the original settings for the traffic signals.

Leonard said that the video technology is not used for traffic enforcement, and the technology is not designed to traffic enforcement. However, he added that the videos are held in the memory for a short period and could be used to help investigate an accident if looked into quickly enough.

The township has received a $200,000 grant from PennDOT for the technology, and the Commissioners approved installing the video technology at five intersections, including:

  • Virginia and Office Center Drives
  • Virginia Dr. and Susquehanna Rd.
  • Dreshertown Rd. and S Limekiln Pike
  • Dreshertown Rd. and N Limekiln Pike
  • Limekiln Pike and Susquehanna.

Leonard said the signals are expected to be installed by October or November.
