Safe Super Bowl LIX Parties Encouraged In Philly Region

PennDOT and other agencies are teaming up to promote parties on Sunday that are free from drinking and driving.

PHILADELPHIA REGION —With the Philadelphia Eagles playing on Super Bowl Sunday, PennDOT is teaming up with other agencies to promote parties that will help keep fans safe this weekend.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police, SEPTA, Philadelphia Police Department, and AAA Mid-Atlantic want to remind football fans to plan for a designated driver when heading out to Super Bowl parties, ensuring a safe ride home at the night's end.

"The Super Bowl is a significant night for our community to come together in celebration, but we need responsible drivers on the roads," said PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi. "If you plan to be away from home during the Super Bowl, make a game plan to ensure you have a designated driver if needed. If you're hosting a party, take care of your designated drivers. Remember: Fans don't let fans drive drunk."

According to PennDOT data, in 2024, 51 crashes resulted in one fatality in the Philadelphia region on Super Bowl Sunday. Of those, six were impaired-driving related.

Police in the Philadelphia region are expected to have roving patrols on Super Bowl Sunday to identify impaired drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Alcohol is not the only substance that can impair driving; illegal prescription and over-the-counter medications can also lead to impairment. Additionally, combining medications with alcohol can amplify alcohol's effects, resulting in even more significant impairment.

“It’s a good bet that when you’re out cheering for the Eagles this Sunday, whether it’s in South Philly, Swarthmore, Media, Manayunk, or Center City, SEPTA has a safe way home for you and your loved ones,” said SEPTA Interim General Manager Scott Sauer. “We want everyone to have a great experience and celebrate responsibly–and an easy way to do that is by using public transportation.”

Preparation is the best game plan, officials said.

Whether you are attending a party or going to a bar or restaurant, make a game plan and follow these simple tips for a safe evening:

  • Always remember that drinking and driving is never acceptable. Even if you've only had one alcoholic drink, make sure to designate a sober driver or plan to use SEPTA, a rideshare service, a taxi, or call a sober friend to ensure you get home safely.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911.
  • If you have a friend who is about to drink and drive, take the keys away and arrange a safe way for them to get home.

AAA Mid-Atlantic advises party planners and football fans to prepare by designating a sober driver or arranging alternate transportation options before the party starts.

"Drinking and driving is not a game – it's a deadly combination and a crime," said AAA Mid-Atlantic Manager of Public and Government Affairs Jana Tidwell. "Make your winning drive a sober one and designate a driver before indulging in alcohol. Don't fumble when it comes to safety. Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable."
