UPPER DUBLIN, PA — The planned Twining Valley Park that is being built on a 105-acre site formerly home to the Twining Valley Golf Club just got some help in the form of state funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Grant Program.

Upper Dublin Township has received a state grant in the amount of $249,100 that will go toward the ongoing development of the park, which will include a dog park, pump track, pickleball courts, pedestrian walkways, and play area for youngsters.

The grant was announced last week by State Rep. Ben Sanchez, D-153, whose legislative district includes the planned park site.

"Redeveloping a former 105-acre golf course into what will be Twining Valley Park has been an exciting project underway in my district for some time," Sanchez said in a statement. "It's uplifting to have these state dollars return to our region and see them benefit a project that countless people will enjoy for years to come."

Sanchez said that the additions of a dog park, pickleball courts, pedestrian paths and play equipment for kids will ensure that the park will have "something for everyone and help strengthen our sense of community."

According to details about the development provided by the township, the first phase of the project began last year and was originally slated to be complete toward the end of 2021. This phase includes a 4.85-acre dog park, 2.5 miles of asphalt trail, 2.5. miles of "bike-optimized earthen trail," a 50-car stone parking lot adjacent to the dog park, improved community connections, stormwater improvements and other site work.

The property has been owned by Upper Dublin Township since the 1960s, although when it was a golf course — (first, the Twining Valley Golf Club and later the Upper Dublin Golf Club) — it was overseen by a private golf management company dating back to the early 1980s.

Eventually the township, after a six-year process to secure the site, made the decision to convert the property back to a public park.

Work under phase 1 of the project was funded by the Upper Dublin Open Space Fund, as well as the Montgomery County Commissioners, the state Department of Conservation of Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

The property is located at 1400 Twining Road in the Dresher section of Upper Dublin Township.
