West German BMW to Repair Recalled Vehicles

1.3 million cars worldwide may need battery-cable repairs.

BMW announced this week it is recalling 1.3 million cars from model years 2003 and 2010 because of an battery-installation problem in some that could prevent ignition.

Staff at West German BMW in Fort Washington aren't sure how many cars from the dealership are affected, if any, a service center employee told Patch. Details about the individual models affected have not yet trickled down to the dealership level.

However, BMW said on Monday that it is recalling all BMW 5 and 6 Series models of the previous generation built between 2003 and 2010.

According to the press release, “In some remote cases, the battery cable cover inside the boot of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted."

The problem could result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, charring or fire, the press release continued. However, there have been no injuries or accidents to date, BMW said.

The recall includes the E60 and E61 5 Series models, and the E63 and E64 6 Series models. About 1.3 million cars worldwide are affected. According to CNN, this equates to about 367,000 cars in the U.S.

The company estimated the necessary repairs would take 30 minutes, and employees at West German BMW say they'll be able to make the repairs.

On the popular BMW online forum bimmerforums.com, members did not seem very concerned. One member said, “at least the repair is free.” Another member said he hopes that the repair takes longer to fix, joking that he would like to drive a loaner F10 550i for the day.
