UPPER MORELAND, PA — The local township building and police department headquarters are poised to get a much-needed upgrade after state grant dollars came through this week.

State Rep. Nancy Guenst, D-Montgomery, announced that $2.8 million in state funding was awarded to Upper Moreland Township to cover the costs of completely renovating the government complex.

The money will go toward various upgrades to the aged complex.

"Today's funding will go a long way in providing the resources for the much-needed renovations to Upper Moreland Township's police station and township building," Guenst said in a statement. "In addition, this project will allow for necessary safety measures and precautions that the previous building lacked. As always, my office will continue to advocate for funding that will have a direct impact on our community and its residents."

The money is expected to help with renovations to the office space in the government complex — which includes both the municipal part and the police department headquarters — as well as upgrades to HVAC, plumbing, electric and information/data infrastructure.

There are also plans for security improvements to the complex, measures designed to protect both staff and visitors.

The township is also looking to improve ADA accommodations at the site.

In perhaps the largest change, the money is expected to help with the construction of an entirely new, freestanding building on the grounds that will house the police department.

Currently, the police headquarters is connected to the municipal portion of the government complex.

The new police department building would be built adjacent to the township building on township owned property.
