Students were introduced to acrylic paints for the first time during this project. In addition to creating a good composition students learned how to start an acrylic painting with a good underpainting layer.

This paint layer, usually brown or blue, is the foundation or the skeletal structure of a painting because it helps the artist lay a wide range of values beneath the skin and flesh or colors of the painting.

A series of two-three additional translucent layers of paint are applied over the underpainting to give the finished work depth, texture and a richness in color.
