Custom Jewelry Design is their Calling Card

B & E Jewelers creates one-of-a-kind treasures.

If you can describe it, chances are Shari Altman can make it.

Jewelry, that is.

Altman, who graduated from jewelry school in 1981 and has been making jewelry "forever," recently handmade a pear-shaped engagement ring for sale at B & E Jewelers, a second-generation store she and her brother Marc, and sister-in-law Karen operate along Street Road in Southampton.

"We do it all the time," Marc Altman said. "We're a custom manufacturer."

The shiny $7,289 pear-shaped diamond engagement ring is a "take off of a ring made previously," Shari Altman said.

"So far everybody's opted to wear it just like that," she said of the white and yellow gold ring accented by a dual band of diamonds.

On average, each piece of custom designed jewelry takes 30 to 40 hours to make from "start to finish," according to Shari Altman. So, how does she do it?

Diamonds are cut by hand, stones are set and conceptualized designs become reality, Shari Altman said.

"It's a select clientele that want it," she said of the unique creations. "We do everything on premises, upstairs by little jewelry elves."
