Dr. Claypoole is highly proficient in all areas of general dentistry, with his specialty being cosmetic dentistry, namely crown and bridge restoration.

Dr. Claypoole proudly served as president of the American Student Dental Association during his junior year. He graduated in 1990 from Temple University School of Dental Medicine with two departmental honors, a corporate scholarship award, along with his DMD.

His passion for dentistry started when he was a young boy who made frequent visits to his family dentist for cavities and corrections to his crooked teeth. “At every session, I learned something new and eventually was able to gain a better understanding of how a dental office works and how to treat patients with consideration and respect.”

Dr. Claypoole has patients he met when they had just started families and has watched their children grow up, graduate from college, and become professionals. He has also watched patients retire and enjoy their retirement. Design Your Smile is truly a family practice!

During his free time, he enjoys Philadelphia sports, especially the Eagles and the Flyers, as well as travel, boating, winemaking, and listening to the music of The King -- Elvis Presley.

Please talk about people neglecting or delaying their dental care and teeth cleaning during COVID-19.

Dr. Robert Claypoole: Now, more than ever, it is important to keep up with your dental hygiene! The effects of the current Covid-19 pandemic have caused many lifestyle changes for all of us. During, and right after the lockdown, many patients could not, or would not leave their homes. Under these stressful circumstances, we have seen a dramatic increase in tooth decay (aka cavities), missing/cracked teeth, and the need for emergency dental care.

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is a huge contributor to all three of those problems mentioned previously. TMJ is intense, stress-induced teeth grinding that we treat through custom-made mouthguards patients can wear at night.

What is the most important aspect of your family dental practice?

I believe the greatest appeal to owning my own dental practice is being able to provide my patients with a more personalized level of service, leading to a better overall dental care experience. Oral health and hygiene are a number one priority at Design That Smile. I pride myself on having a precise and gentle approach based on my many years of experience along with my firm belief that my patients deserve my best work, each and every time.

How has dentistry changed in the past 5 or 10 years?

Each year we progress to more modern technology, holistic care, and new and better material. However, the basics of good oral care and conservative tooth preservation are still the same as when I started out in dentistry. New and easier is not always better!

What does it mean when patients praise your demeanor, professionalism, and skill?

My demeanor, professionalism, and skills are fueled by my genuine passion for dentistry. Most patients don’t prefer to come to the dentist in the first place due to its uncomfortable nature. When they express satisfaction with the outcome of their visit, that means they genuinely felt like their time here was satisfactory and better than they expected. Which makes me feel very proud of my practice and our dental team.

Do you feel that your patients are like extended family?

Yes! Seeing most patients every 6 months or several weeks in a row for a procedure allows me to keep a proactive, ongoing relationship with them.

Please talk about your community involvement (and hobbies) and why you engage in them.

My wife, Judy, our three children, and I actively support local animal shelters, specifically Tiny Paws Rescue, which is where our office emotional support dog Rosie is from! High-anxiety patients love having her on their laps during their procedure/cleaning! On my days off, I thoroughly enjoy sitting back and relaxing while watching anything that’s Philadelphia sports-related!

Why should new patients come to Design That Smile?

Our main priority is the health of our patients. As the head dentist, it’s important to me that everyone who walks through my door for a dental service will leave feeling educated, informed, and confident, in the work that they just had done. It’s vital that every one of our patients know that we genuinely care about them and their well-being.

We also pride ourselves in partnering with a plethora of healthcare companies that allow our patients to receive the preventative and restorative dental care they NEED at an affordable price! Overall, we’re always thrilled to accept new patients, and greatly appreciate our returning ones which is why we offer 4 different patient discounts that you can find more information about on our website!

What do you love about being a dad?

I have three children; Angelina, 19, Gabrielle, 17, and Nicholas, 8. My favorite part about being a dad is my ability to proudly support my kids in each stage of their lives as they grow up! Whether it’s gymnastics, baseball, or their first job, I will always be there to guide them through it.

5 Top Tips for keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

1. Make your teeth an everyday priority! Start your routine with a mouth rinse (use your preferred brand of mouthwash) for 30 seconds. Next, floss your upper and bottom teeth (be sure to check out our blog for tips on how to floss!). After, brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes. Finally, mouth rinse for 30 seconds again to get the last of any reminisce of food or plaque left behind!

2. Please make sure to schedule dental checkups/exams every 6 months! We will be able to track or prevent any signs of dental problems such as Gingivitis from getting worse!

3. Your diet matters! Prevent tooth decay and tooth erosion by avoiding foods that are highly acidic, and food that is high in sugars.

4. It’s never too late to upgrade your toothbrush to an electric one! The features of electric toothbrushes tend to clean your teeth more efficiently and thoroughly.

5. It’s not how hard your brush, it’s HOW you brush! Brushing too hard can cause tooth erosion and gum pain. If you brush too softly, you’ll miss a lot of the food particles that can build up over time and cause issues like bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay.
