Historic Day At Kennywood For USC Park-goers

The line for the Jack Rabbit seemed long but moved briskly as Angela Reitz, daughter Brooke and friend Jacelyn Wong waited patiently late on a muggy Monday morning.

They were part of the ensemble for Upper St. Clair Day at Kennywood Park, and they were about to take a ride into history: Monday marked the 92^nd anniversary of the opening of the venerable rollercoaster.

Had they known it, that fact might have been moderately interesting for Brooke and Jacelyn, who just finished third grade. For the time being, their focus was on the thrill of sharp climbs and steep drops, of waving their hands and yelling at the top of their lungs.

And so it went, with the trio completing what generations have done since 1920, and barely a hair out of place to show for it.

Nearby, other park-goers ventured onto the Log Jammer, which has been soaking riders since 1975.

As the sun started peeking through the clouds, the lure of getting wet started appealing to more people, including Streams Elementary School students Kelsey O'Leary, Sara Hess and Malorie Glancy. They emerged with the smiles on their faces well worth the excess moisture.

So it went throughout the day, with folks who fought the traffic from Upper St. Clair to West Mifflin glad they made the pilgrimage. And those who rode the Jack Rabbit can take pride in being part of nine-plus decades of history.
