Centennial Schools, Warminster Sr. Center Closing For Coronavirus

The closures were announced as Gov. Tom Wolf shut down schools for two weeks in neighboring Montgomery County.

WARMINSTER, PA — Schools in the Warminster-based Centennial School District will be closed Friday and a senior center in the township will shut down for two weeks over concerns about the new coronavirus.

Officials announced the closings on Thursday, as neighboring Montgomery County saw a more expansive coronavirus-related shutdown at the order of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.

In a message to the school community, Centennial Superintendent David Baugh encouraged families to begin preparing for the possibility of a longer school shutdown.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we encourage parents and guardians to make plans for childcare (in the event of prolonged closures) should the need arise over the month of March possibly into April," Baugh wrote. "This is a very fluid situation and things can change quickly. We are approaching this as a weather event right now, i.e days will be added at the end of the year. That is subject to change as the situation unfolds."

Also Thursday afternoon, Warminster Township Manager Gregg Schuster announced that Ben Wilson Senior Center will close for two weeks, starting Monday.

The center, at 580 Delmont Ave., will continue to deliver Meals on Wheels and try to complete AARP tax preparation appointments that are already scheduled, Schuster said.

"This is being done out of an abundance of caution," Schuster said in a news release. "Facilities that house older populations in Warminster have enacted screening protocols to protect their residents."

Earlier Thursday, Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster announced it is canceling an open house that was scheduled for Sunday.

Warminster sits just across the Bucks County line from Montgomery County, where Wolf on Thursday ordered schools, mass transit and other public gatherings to be shut down for two weeks.

As of Thursday, 13 of Pennsylvania's 22 reported cases of the virus, known as COVID-19, were in Montgomery County.
