DOYLESTOWN, PA - For the 32nd year, hundreds hit the streets of Doylestown Borough on Saturday for the iconic Doylestown 5K race and Doylestown’s Mightiest Mile.

And what a race it was.

Cloudy skies and temperatures in the 60s combined to create the perfect conditions for a hugely successful race.

The event, presented by Discover Doylestown as part of the Bucks 5K Series, drew more than 700 runners who raced through the borough for the benefit of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and Discover Doylestown.

As the runners crossed the finish line at Evolution Candy on East State Street, Kris Boger, the president of Discover Doylestown, cheered them on.

“I don’t believe anyone beat the course record set back in 2008, but he came close,” she said of Dean Ricco, the first runner to cross the finish line. “He was real close.”

The Ivyland Borough man made it look easy, crossing the finish line in 16:06 and besting the field with a near record pace.

“I would have liked to have gone under 16, but this was fun,” said Ricco, who recently graduated from DeSales University with a degree in computer science and completed his college track season.

“My last race was a little over a week ago. This was like a shock. I’m used to running flat surfaces and I’m thinking, ‘Oh wow. A hill.’ It was nice going down - oh, easy - but coming back up it was tough. It was definitely a shock to the system because I’m still in cross country mode.

“But it was a really fun event,” he added. “I liked it when we turned around and everyone was cheering us on. That’s not something you get when you’re running track.”

The 2020 William Tenant graduate raced with two other DeSales students - Mary Frances McNulty of Doylestown and Joey D’Angelis of Buckingham. Together they represented the past, present and future of the school.

For Mary Frances, who will be starting her senior year at DeSales in the fall, this was her first 5K race. She has watched the race from her house for years but this was her first time running it. She is a graduate of Villa Joseph Marie High School in Northampton Township and she had served as a student representative on the Doylestown Borough Council.

DeAngelis, who will be a freshman at DeSales in the fall, has run the race several times before. “It’s very challenging,” he said of the race, pointing to a hill in the middle of the course. He posted a time of 21:46.

The first female to cross the finish line was Jenn Cronin from North Wales, posting a time of 18:45.

The top three oldest to finish the race were Jack DeLong, 83, of Huntingdon Valley with a time of 29:06.88; Dan Carroll, 81, of Philadelphia with a time of 38:26.27; and T. William Singleton, 80, of Piney Point, Maryland, with a time of 40:46.41.
