WARMINSTER TOWNSHIP, PA — German grocer Lidl has tried to open a supermarket in the township since 2016.

Its first attempt fell through. And, right now, the second attempt may not be looking too promising either.

"They haven't come in front of us," Warminster Township Supervisors Chairman Kenneth Hayes told Patch. "They know where we stand with development."

Lidl was weighing developing a parcel at the corner of Street and Norristown roads, Township Engineer Craig Kennard had told Patch.

That's one of the last parcels open for development in the township, and Hayes said officials are very hesitant about its development.

He said there are issues in terms of stormwater management and encroachment near busy Street Road, a state highway filled with congestion on a daily basis.

Township officials have said that the property near Christ's Home is on land that cannot be developed.

The property was sold to Lidl in 2023.

A Christ's Home spokesperson said that any permitting issues are between the township, Lidl, and PennDOT.

"Christ's Home has a very good relationship with Warminster Township and Lidl," the spokesperson said.

In 2016, Lidl planned to build a 29,136-square-foot grocery store and a roughly 6,000-square-foot restaurant on the old Pathmark property site on York Road. But then the grocer asked for several variance changes and plans fell through.

Lidl has more than 12,000 locations in 32 nations, including supermarkets in Lansdale, Philadelphia, and Easton. Its store in King of Prussia was closed, too, after operating for 18 months.
