Hours before the federal government shut down at midnight Tuesday, customers piled into the U.S. Post Office on Mearns Road in Warminster, desperate to send out that one last piece of mail before the doors closed.
"It was crowded as heck," said Warminster Postmaster Michael Raffaele.
It turns out that the mad rush was unnecessary since the post office is one of several government services unaffected by the shutdown.
"We are completely self-funded," said Raffaele. "We do not receive our budget from Congress."
Other offices that remain open while a Republicans and Democrats continue their impasse include the Social Security Administration, Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
