PENNSYLVANIA, PA — State Rep. Chris Pielli, a Chester County Democrat, announced that his resolution to declare Dec. 16 as “Battle of the Bulge Day” in Pennsylvania passed the state House by a vote of 202-1.

The goal of the resolution is to honor the efforts and sacrifices of thousands of U.S. troops, particularly those from Pennsylvania, during World War II. The Battle of the Bulge in Belgium started on Dec 16, 1944, and ended on Jan. 18, 1945.

Pielli, an Army veteran, expressed pride in passing the legislation, noting that Pennsylvania troops played a crucial role in the historic battle.

“Without the courage and sacrifice of Pennsylvania troops, in particular our own 28th Infantry Division, the history of this battle and the war might have been told very differently,” said Pielli, who represents, West Chester Borough and East Bradford, West Goshen, and parts of East Goshen townships.

Pielli said the resolution ensures the infantry's bravery and sacrifice will be remembered, especially as the state prepares to commemorate the battle’s 80th anniversary in 2024.

As part of the resolution, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will create and publish educational materials about the Battle of the Bulge.

The materials will highlight the bravery and sacrifice of Pennsylvania soldiers, airmen, and military units, with a special focus on Pennsylvania's 28th Infantry Division.
