WEST CHESTER, PA — The president of West Chester University issued a rare statement addressing current events this week, addressing and condemning the attempted assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.

It comes as the shooting brought a brief moment of unity against the violence, which left one dead and two others injured at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

"The hallmark of our democracy continues to be the peaceful engagement of all citizens in a fair and free election process," West Chester president Laurie R. Lorraine Bernotsky said in the statement. "Our deepest condolences go to the victims of yesterday’s tragedy. The days and weeks ahead will surely continue to test our nation. No matter where sentiments fall, however, one thing remains clear: there is power in peace and civility."

Bernotsky added that political differences should never lead to bloodshed, a fundamental ideal upon which values of democracy — and higher education — are based.

"These are times that demand that we remain committed to a democratic process that is free of violence and one that is civil, humane, and respectful," she said. "It is my hope that we can all recommit to this today, even when others do not."
