LOWER MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA —On the first day of spring Monday, students at the Woodside Christian Preschool heard the sounds of chirping.

But it wasn't coming from a robin or another bird outside the school windows. These sounds were from three baby chicks that hatched Monday morning.

“I love having the chicks at school because we get to see baby chicks all the time,” said Lola, a kindergarten student.

In partnership with Quiver Farm, the preschool accepted 12 eggs and took care of them for a week, turning them regularly and keeping the incubator at a consistent temperature like a mother hen.

Three baby chicks hatched early Monday morning. Another three chicks emerged throughout the morning.

The school has participated in the program for more than 20 years.

“It’s a great opportunity for the kids to learn about animals that come from eggs. We talk about it in books, and then we can show them in real time what happens,” teacher Sharon Latsch said. “There are a lot of lessons we can do about spring and ultimately relate the story of Easter, highlighting Jesus and rebirth.”

The school will host the chicks for the rest of the week when Quiver Farm will bring them back to the farm.

Woodside Christian Preschool offers programs for 3-and-4-year-olds and a transitional kindergarten program for children who may need an additional developmental year.
