Beloved Pennsbury School Crossing Guard Mourned

LOWER MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — The Lower Makefield Township and Pennsbury School District communities are mourning the loss of beloved school crossing guard Hazel Hilghman.

The Lower Makefield Township Police Department expressed "heartfelt condolences and deepest respect" for Hazel Hilghman, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 83.

Hilghman served the township and school district as a crossing guard for the past 12 years, "protecting our children, supporting our police officers, and embodying the very best of community service," police said.

"We are so sorry to learn of Hazel's passing," the Pennsbury School District said. "She was a shining example of selflessness and service to one's community. May Hazel rest in peace."

Lower Makefield Police said Hilghman was also the mother of Lt. Lawrence Hilghman.

"Her commitment to service extended far beyond her time in uniform. Hazel lived a life centered on family, kindness, and meaningful contributions to her community," police said.

Born in Brooklyn, Hilghman built a career in Medical Office Administration, serving both physicians and patients with sincerity, professionalism, and heart. After retiring in 2013, she continued her legacy of care through her work as a crossing guard, "a role she performed with pride, purpose, and joy every day."

"Hazel exemplified service — not through recognition, rank, or ceremony, but through daily acts of responsibility, compassion, reliability, and love for her neighbors. Her presence at the crosswalk, her warm smile, and her genuine care will be forever remembered by the children she protected, the parents she reassured, and the officers who proudly served alongside her," police said.

The Lower Makefield Township Police Department will remember Hazel with honor, appreciation, and admiration. Her legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire us all.

"Rest in peace, Hazel. Your duty is complete, and your service will never be forgotten," police said.
