Driver's Car Rolls Into Delaware River In Yardley

Police say a woman had gotten out of her car to check the engine when it rolled into the Delaware, then floated downstream.

YARDLEY, PA — Traffic was blocked in Yardley on Monday as emergency crews worked to remove a car that had rolled away from its driver and fallen into the Delaware River.

Yardley Borough Police were called at 10:06 a.m. to the 120 block of S. Delaware Avenue. There, officers met with a woman who said she'd been driving south when her Toyota Camry started to smoke and vibrate.

She got out of the car to check it and, when she did, it began to roll, she told police. The woman tried to get back into the car and stop it but failed to do so before it rolled into the river.

Police say the car was carried south by the Delaware's current until it got stuck on some brush along the riverbank near the 150 block of Delaware Avenue. Police and the Yardley-Makefield Fire Co. managed to pull the car from the river, along with heavy-duty tow equipment from Superior Motor Service, police said.

"We are grateful that no one was injured during today’s incident and are reminded of the danger associated with the Delaware's current," said Yardley Police Chief Joseph Kelly.
