It started in early February at the St. John Lutheran Church annual congregational meeting. It was discussed that our congregation could not assist the homeless situation as some of our local congregations and synagogues were assisting. St. John Lutheran Church has been helping the community needs with collection of non-perishable food and personal care items with the benches outside the church. Food and other items are delivered to several local food banks, Emergency Relief Association, Interfaith Food Alliance and Caring for Friends, with over 30,000 pounds a year.

Even though the congregation also supports World Hunger through the Lutheran Relief Fun, but they wanted to do more. So knowing that Lent was to start soon, they decided to make available $5,000 to be matched by contributions to AHTN - Advocates for the Homeless and Those in Need a local organization that does what is so needed in our area. The $5,000 would be matched with contributions from congregation members, their families and the community.

On Sunday, April 21st, just after the 9:30 am church service a check in the amount of $12,030.00 was presented to Karen Mineo of the AHTN to help in their mission.

Not only was St. John's Lenten Challenge met but was exceeded.

As for information about AHTN, and the work they do- During this past winter they had 50 Code Blue nights, hosted by 4 different houses of worship and provided meals for individuals and families. They also provide support and guidance to those needing help to make connections for assistance available. AHTN currently has another $5,000 challenge out there and if you would like to help you can send a check to AHTN- P.O. Box 184, Fairless Hills, PA 19030.
