Millions of working Americans outside the retail sector get a paid holiday for Labor Day, which became a federal holiday in 1894 to recognize workers’ contributions to the nation’s strength, prosperity, and well-being during the Industrial Revolution.

Retail stores — grocery stores such as Trader Joe’s, home improvement stores such as Lowe’s and The Home Depot, and big-box stores such as Target and Walmart — will, for the most part, operate regular hours during the long weekend.
