Last Month's Slight Relief At RI Pumps Gone, Gas Prices Up 9 Cents

RHODE ISLAND — Gas prices are once again on the rise in Rhode Island and the rest of the United States.
Rhode Island's average gas price is up 9 cents from last week, averaging $4.18 per gallon, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast said Monday. Monday's price is 4 cents higher than a month ago and $1.35 higher than it was in May 2021.
Global oil prices are holding around $100 per barrel amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. AAA said the oil price accounts for about 60 percent of pump prices, the national average for a gallon of regular is now $4.19, an increase of seven cents since last week.

"As long as the supply remains tight, it will be hard for crude oil prices to fall and consumers will in turn face higher prices at the pump,” said Lloyd Albert, a AAA spokesperson. "It now costs drivers in the U.S. about $23 more to fill up than a year ago."
