'Life-Threatening Rip Currents' Along Rhode Island Beaches: State
Expect dangerous surf through Friday, the state warned.

Expect dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents along Rhode Island's southern-facing beaches and shoreline as Hurricane Erin passes offshore, the state warned.
"The storm will produce powerful waves that will break larger and farther onshore, creating hazards for boaters, beachgoers, anglers, and onlookers," the state of Rhode Island said in a media release.

"Do not stand on rocky coastal areas and stay far away from areas where waves might splash over," the release said. "Waves can easily sweep a person into the water from what seems like a safe viewing area."
The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory through Saturday morning.

The advisory predicted "Large breaking waves increasing each day, peaking Friday with waves of 6 to 10 feet expected in the surf zone" and warned that "Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions."
The state media release recommended that beachgoers remain "close to lifeguards, heed all safety announcements, and follow beach warning flags."

"Beach staff will update flags at state beaches throughout the week as conditions change and implement swimming restrictions as needed," the release said.
