Rhode Island University Baseball Alum Named Miami Marlins Coach
The team announced the move on social media Tuesday.
KINGSTON, RI — Former University of Rhode Island baseball player Chris Hess has been named to the Miami Marlins coaching staff, the team announced on social media.
Hess joins the Marlins as an assistant hitting coach after three seasons as a minor league hitting coach with the Boston Red Sox organization, the university said in a media release.Introducing our 2026 coaching staff! pic.twitter.com/f9jSj0bXTa

"Most recently, Hess was the hitting coach for the Red Sox Double-A affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs," the release said. "Prior to his time with the Red Sox organization, Hess spent time as a volunteer assistant coach with the Rams."

Hess, a North Kingstown native, "played a critical role in Rhode Island's 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship win," according to the release.

"In 2017, Hess was a 17th round draft pick to the New York Yankees out of Rhode Island," the release said.

"He is the program leader in triples with 19 and was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2015," per the release. "Hess' 142 runs scored in his Rhode Island career is tied for 10th-most in program history."
