Niche evaluated 30,000 private schools.

The Wheeler School in Providence is the best private high school in Rhode Island, according to a new ranking from Niche.
For the 2026 Best Private High Schools in America ranking released Monday, Niche evaluated 30,000 private schools on measures such as test score, academic performance and input from students, alumni and parents, as well as quantitative data to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities.

Behind the Wheeler School, rounding out the top 10 private schools in Rhode Island are:
No. 2 The Moses Brown School, Providence, ranked 147th nationally;
No. 3 St. George's School, Middletown, ranked 296th nationally;
No. 4 Portsmouth Abbey School, Portsmouth ranked 532nd nationally;
No. 5 St. Andrew's School, Barrington, ranked 614th nationally;
No. 6 Providence Country Day School, East Providence, ranked 757th nationally;
No. 7 The Lincoln School, Providence, ranked 872 nationally;
No. 8 Rocky Hill Country Day School, East Greenwich;
No. 9 School One, Providence;
No. 10 La Salle Academy, Providence;

Niche also evaluated the nation’s 93,000 public schools in the rankings. Barrington High School finished at the top in Rhode Island. North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics was No. 1 in the country.
