URI's Thursday Game Canceled Due To COVID Outbreak Within Rams Program

KINGSTON, RI — The University of Rhode Island men's basketball game against Milwaukee scheduled for Thursday at the Ryan Center has been canceled due to a COVID outbreak within the URI program, the school announced Monday.

According to URI athletic officials, multiple players and staff members for the Rams have tested positive for COVID.

ESPN reported that this is believed to be the first Division I men's college basketball game canceled or postponed due to COVID during the 2022-23 season.

URI officials said the Milwaukee/URI game will not be played this season.

Officials said that fans who purchased single-game tickets to the contest will get refunds. Meanwhile, those who had tickets through mini-plan packages have the option of a refund or an exchange for a future game.

Rhode Island (4-8) last was in action Sunday when it lost 75-66 to Georgia State in Atlanta.

The Rams' next scheduled game is Saturday's Atlantic 10 opener at Duquesne. URI athletic officials expect the Rams team to be available for that contest.
