Warning: Rhode Island High Surf Advisory Issued

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory through Thursday night.

Washington and Newport counties in Rhode Island as well as southern Bristol County in Massachusetts were placed under the advisory.

The National Weather Service said to expect large breaking waves "increasing each day, peaking Thursday with waves of 6 to 10 feet expected in the surf zone."

The conditions are so hazardous that the National Weather Service deems them "life-threatening."

The conditions also exacerbate beach erosion, according to the National Weather Service.

"Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions," the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather Service said that Hurricane Erin — which was a Category 4 storm as it passed through the Bahamas on Monday — will result in high surf and dangerous rip currents to ocean-exposed beaches from Tuesday through Friday.
