Library Fundraising Group Eyes Renovation of Second Floor

A fundraising subcommittee of the Barrington Public Library Board of Trustees meets for the first time tonight, Oct. 17.

The Barrington Public Library Board of Trustees has formed a fundraising subcommittee that meets tonight, Oct. 17, for the first time with one goal in mind – renovate the second floor.

β€œThat floor has not been renovated for 40 years,” said Debbie Barchi, library director. β€œAt the least, it could use new rugs and carpets and ceiling tiles.”

A completely redesigned children’s room and making the auditorium and gallery behind it at the other end of the secondΒ floor soundproof from each other in some way is also on Barchi’s agenda.

β€œWith a redesign, we would start clean,” Barchi said. β€œThis area was just kind of pieced together.”

And the auditorium and gallery clash with each other.

β€œWe need to find a way to make them completely independent of each other,” she said. β€œRight now, we can only schedule one program at a time there.”

Of course, any renovation project will cost money. And that will be a top priority of the fundraising committee.

β€œApproaches are needed,” Barchi said. β€œDo we look for grants? Or float a bond? Or conduct a capital campaign? All will be explored as we look for ways to raise money.”

At some point, she said, the trustees will probably get an opinion from a professional fundraiser for ways to raise money.

β€œBut this is our first meeting,” she said. "We're a neophyte right now."Β

The meeting is open to the public. In fact, anyone with a great idea would be welcome to share it with the committee. It will meet rightΒ after the 7 pm meeting of the entire board, probably around 8 or 8:15 pm.
