The desk sergeant came out and commanded Rinn to stop. But Rinn drove at the sergeant and hit the students' vehicle again, which is when the sergeant shot twice into Rinn's vehicle, according to police. Bristol police have not identified the desk sergeant.
Police said the two student suffered minor injuries, and the desk sergeant was not harmed.
Bristol police officers are equipped with body cameras, but because the sergeant was on administrative duty, he did not have his camera on. Police said they will review security footage of the incident, which was captured on the station's security cameras.
Per state law, Rhode Island State Police and Attorney General Peter Neronha are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
