What's Open and Closed on Labor Day?

Can you believe it's Labor Day already? [There are some stores around here already stocked for Halloween!]Ā
It's a national holiday, meaning federal and state government offices, as well as Bristol Town Hall and Warren Town Hall and other local offices [except for emergency services] are closed.
The U.S. Department of Labor'sĀ website on the history of Labor DayĀ explains that the first recorded Labor Day occurred on a Tuesday ā Sept. 5, 1882, organized by members of the Central Labor Union in New York City, NY.After changing the annual date to the first Monday of September, labor organizations continued to honor the holiday ā and several state enacted laws approving it ā until 1894, when Congress made Labor Day an official national holiday.

The Bristol-Warren School District is also closed. Classes are scheduled to resume Sept. 3.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will run aĀ Sunday/Holiday service scheduleĀ on Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, in observance of Labor Day. The Sunday/Holiday schedule will apply to all regular fixed-route buses and trolleys. The RIDE program will operate only ADA routes, and RIPTA offices will be closed.
